What the aurora are called up in this neck of the woods because of the beams of light that dance across the sky.

This was at the peak of the display with strong beams of light reaching quite high in the sky.

Inner Harbour 1974

Between 1860 and 1890 Wick was the largest herring port in Scotland with as many as 1000 boats using the harbour facilities (which had been extended by Thomas Telford). This view was taken in September 1974, just before North Sea oil servicing became important, and still shows fishing boats moored up two or three deep.

Burgh of Pulteneytown Crest

Pultenytown, once a burgh in its own right, is now part of Wick. At one time it even had its own member of Parliament. The crest shows the importance of the herring fishery.

The view towards Warehouse Hill from Whaligoe.

The hill is surrounded by a fort, a broch and numerous cairns. It is 156 metres above sea level at its summit.

Former Hotel by the Wick River

Variously known as the Wick New Hotel and the Wick Station Hotel, the building dates from the 1870s when the railway line was opened from Helmsdale. It is now a nursing home.
